Summary
<ul> ~ Jobless claims for the week ending March 31 came in very near expectations at 383,000. While this was up from the 365,000 of a week earlier, it keeps the four-week moving average largely unchanged over the past three weeks at 377,500. Thus, the number of claims has actually leveled off over the past month at a figure that still indicates a moderately expanding labor market.
~ While continuing claims edged downward during the week ending March 24, its four-week moving average continued to rise, thus indicating that while the pace of layoffs may not be accelerating, the time needed to find a new job continues to lengthen.
~ Yet during the week ending March 24, only Michigan reported an unusually large increase in claims, and only four states -- New York, Pennsylvania, California, and Oklahoma -- reported an unusually large decline in the number of claims. Thus, labor markets across the nation generally are holding steady, with little recent changes in either direction.
~ Past recessions have been associated with initial jobless claims rising to a range between 400,000 and 500,000. Thus, while jobless claims are high and well above their level one year ago, they continue to signal a slowly expanding economy, albeit one with moderately easing labor markets. </ul>
