Re: US-Wirtschaftsdaten: Consumer Credit im Februar 2001 unerwartet hoch
Hi!

Summary

~ It sounds like a broken record, but consumer credit outstanding increased by more than expected in February. Outstandings surged $13.5 billion. The first two months of the year have seen outstandings grow at a double-digit annualized pace.
~ All the strength came in the revolving category. Credit card debt surged at a nearly 20% annualized pace. This is the fastest pace of growth since December 1995 and followed double-digit annualized growth in January. Nonrevolving growth slowed markedly to about 3%.
~ There are at least two forces at work here. First, after slowing precipitously in December, consumer spending has rebounded to a healthy, if unspectacular pace. The relative softness in December’s numbers also makes the month-to-month gains look larger. But second, it is almost certain that the weaker economy and rising layoffs are leading to more emergency credit card usage to smooth income disruptions.
