08:45 ET: US-Pre-market:
08:45 ET: Pre-market activity carries a slightly negative bias this morning. S&P futures at 1215, trade even with fair value while Nasdaq 100 futures at 1765, trade eight points below fair value. Durable goods data for March were just released and the headline number was a rise of 3%, well above consensus of +0.5%. However, excluding transportation (the idea is to take out large aircraft orders), orders dropped 1.8%. Durable goods data are volatile which means markets place less weight on this single data point. The release hasn't moved futures much as the markets continue to wait on New and Existing Home Sales which are set for release at 10:00 ET. Separately, a number of telecomm equipment leaders have been downgraded by UBSW based on its review of the further worsening of U.S. telecom capex trends for 2001. While the firm does not see material downside from here, it also sees substantial upside as a challenge. As a consequence the following issues have been dropped to a Hold from Buy: Cisco Systems (CSCO 16.26), Ciena (CIEN 56.67), Juniper Networks (JNPR 57.00) and Nortel Networks (NT 15.50).
