NAPM: Industrial Outlook Worst in Decades
ORLANDO, Fla. (Reuters) - U.S. manufacturing executives are more pessimistic about the 12-month outlook for their sector than in nearly four decades, the National Association of Purchasing Management (NAPM) said Tuesday.
In its semi-annual report issued at its annual conference, NAPM said 38 percent of purchasing managers were pessimistic over the 12-month outlook, up sharply from five percent in the previous survey taken last December.
``The 38 percent who indicated worried/pessimistic is the highest recorded since this question was first asked in 1962,'' the report said.
Manufacturers said they expected business revenues to rise only 1.0 percent in 2001, down from forecasts for 4.4 percent revenue growth in the December survey. The report said manufacturers expected employment to fall 1.3 percent in the next six months. That is worse than an outlook for a 0.5 percent fall in employment predicted for 2001 six months ago.
While manufacturers are pessimistic overall, a majority are predicting that the second half of 2001 will be better than the first half of this year. Fifty-six percent predicted business would improve by later this year, up from 45 percent in the previous survey.
