LONDON (AFX) - The Bank of England said it sold 20 tonnes of gold, or 643,000 ounces, at a price of 268.00 usd per ounce.

The Bank said its auction was 3.7 times subscribed.


Today's was the first of six planned auctions following March's announcement by the UK Treasury that it intends to sell 150 tonnes of its gold holdings during financial year 2001/02.


The Treasury sold 150 tonnes of its gold holdings in the previous financial year.


Gold was trading at 267.95 usd per ounce at 12.23 pm.
