Re: Beats Estimates, jawoll!
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Alcoa Inc. (NYSE:AA - news), the world's No. 1 aluminum producer, on Friday said second-quarter net income fell 16 percent after taking hefty charges for idling plants in the U.S. Northwest, where power costs have soared.
The company, based in Pittsburgh, said second-quarter earnings, after net charges of $114 million, were $315 million, or 36 cents a share. Alcoa earned $377 million, or 47 cents a share, in the year-earlier period.
However, the company's revenue rose to $6 billion from $5.6 billion a year earlier as it sold some of its contracted electricity -- which normally would have been used to run the plants -- back to the power market.
