NEW YORK (CNNmoney) - <font color="#FF0000">Wholesale prices tumbled in the United States last month, the government said Friday, as the inflation risk in the world's largest economy continues to be low during an economic slowdown</font>.
The Labor Department reported the Producer Price Index (PPI) <font color="#FF0000">fell 1.6 percent last month - the biggest drop since the department started keeping records in 1947</font> - after September's 0.4 percent gain. Economists surveyed by Briefing.com expected PPI to fall only 0.3 percent.
Excluding volatile food and energy prices - gas prices fell by 21 percent - the <font color="#FF0000">"core" PPI fell 0.5 percent after rising 0.3 percent in September</font>. Economists surveyed by Briefing.com expected core PPI to fall 0.1 percent.
Treasury bond prices edged higher after the news.
