DESERT AIRSTRIP, Afghanistan, Dec 5 (Reuters) - U.S. helicopters flew U.S. servicemen and Afghan opposition fighters wounded by an errant U.S. bomb on Wednesday to a desert airstrip in southern Afghanistan used by the Marines as a forward operating base.
"Taskforce 58 forces transported injured U.S. forces from the vicinity of Kandahar to our location here where they are being treated and transferred to other medical facilities," said Marine spokesman Captain David Romley.
Two special forces soldiers were killed and 20 wounded when a B-52 bomber dropped its ordnance close to friendly forces, said Captain Stuart Upton, adding that an unknown number of Afghan opposition troops were also killed or wounded.
"We treat our allies the same way we treat ourselves and certainly anyone out there fighting alongside us we have made available all of our medical facilities and staff," Upton said.
He declined to say how many Afghan wounded had been brought to the base.
Reporters saw one civilian who was brought to the base. He was bearded, aged around 30, wearing black robes and a Turban and limping on his right leg.
Several Super Stallion helicopters were seen flying into the base but reporters were not allowed to film or photograph the injured.
Medical facilities at the Marine base include an operating room in a specially adapted tent staffed by two surgeons, a large ward in a warehouse and two other medical tents that can be used for overflow patients.
There are 10 Navy doctors at the base as well as a number of nurses and medical corpsman.
A CH53 Super Stallion helicopter is on constant standby for medical evacuations and standard practice is to stabilise the injured on site and transport them either to a ship in the Arabian Sea, such as the U.S.S. Peleliu, or to another country.
The desert airstrip was seized by Marines on November 25 and is now the base for a substantial U.S. ground and air force.
