Andersen says staff disposed of Enron documents
(UPDATE: adds details)
NEW YORK, Jan 10 (Reuters) - Accounting giant Andersen said on Thursday its employees disposed of or deleted a number of documents related to its audit of energy trader Enron Corp. (NYSE:ENE - news), whose recent collapse was triggered by problems resulting from off-balance sheet accounting.
Andersen, which has come under fire from investors and lawmakers for signing off on Enron's books, said it had notified the Securities and Exchange Commission and Department of Justice that ``in recent months individuals... disposed of a significant but undetermined number of electronic and paper documents and correspondence relating to the Enron engagement.''
Andersen, the No. 5 accounting firm, said it had asked former U.S. Senator John Danforth to conduct an immediate and comprehensive review of Andersen's records management policy and to recommend improvements.
The accounting firm said it had suspended its current records management policy immediately and had instructed all its partners and employees to retain all existing documents until further notice.
It said its suspended document policy required in certain circumstances the destruction of certain types of documents. It said millions of documents related to Enron still exist, and that the firm had successfully retrieved some of the deleted electronic files.
