The"stickler" now is real estate. I can tell you what's happening here in San Diego (La Jolla) which has been one of the hottest markets in the nation. Houses are for sale, but the bids have dried up -- no, they've vanished. At this point home buyers are frightened, and they're waiting -- and thanking their lucky stars that they have held off on buying.
Sellers are also waiting, and the waiting period is getting longer and longer. A friend of ours has a house for sale in this area; he tells us he's not even getting any offers at all. Not even any bids. The buyers are waiting, convinced that time is on their side. And who can blame them?
Thus, the whole housing picture has turned worse than expected. And, of course, the market is watching weighing, measuring. In the meantime, mortgage rates are rising, this in the face of millions of"teaser" and variable rate mortgages that have to be reset. The banks are going to be in the real estate business.
