The US dollar has weakened dramatically today as comments by a Chinese official caused the market to believe that China would buy euros as part of its reserve diversification. Cheng Siwei, a vice-chairman of the standing committee of the National People's Congress, was reported as saying that China should buy strong currencies such as the euro, although he later said that his comments were not meant to mean that China should buy more euros. Cheng is a relatively well-known lawmaker in China, although he has not been heard from much in the past on FX or finance matters, and indeed does not have any official responsibility in those areas. EURUSD traded up to a high of 1.4666 from a session low of 1.4555 and helped boost commodity currencies, with USDCAD trading down to a low of 0.9809 from 0.9205. The current macro environment, highlighted by strong commodity prices and increasing uncertainty regarding the US economic slowdown, does not bode well for the US dollar in the near term....
