The United States has the world's biggest reserves in gold and has made it known that it will keep them. Alan Greenspan has explained the traditional attitude of the United States in these words: 'We did not sense a need to hold what we perceived to be weaker currencies in reserve because presumably we could always purchase them in the market, when, and if, the need arose. We held significant reserves in only that medium we judged a harder currency (than the dollar), that is gold.' |
