>The Citizen Services Act:
>On April 9, President Bush went to Bridgeport, Connecticut to announce the particulars of a bill he will
>send to Congress to follow up on his State of The Union address which called upon all Americans to give
>4000 hours or two years of their lives to “Community Service”. The whole political tabernacle will be
>run by the Corporation for National and Community Service.
>With this, the Constitutional prohibition against involuntary servitude is flanked. Supported by another
>tidal wave of taxpayers’ money out of Washington, the servitude is “voluntary”. At least, it is supposed
>to be “voluntary”. But as college students (and others) are now beginning to find out in an increasing
>number of cases, if they do not volunteer, they either cannot get the final credits to graduate at all (these
>credit issue from Community Service) or getting their degree becomes much harder without the credits
>from Community Service.
>Four thousand hours - two years of a human being’s life - in “voluntary” servitude. Jefferson, Adams,
>Paine, and many others would be reaching for the musket over the mantelpiece.
>Apparently, colleges and other places of learning are loving this. They get a sum of money from
>Washington, after which they can throw the students out the door. And after that, the students spend their
>time sweeping leaves off the streets, cleaning gutters, reading stories to people in old peoples’ homes, or
>walking the dogs of the handicapped. Finally, they graduate - having learned - what?
>They have learned, over 4000 hours, that they are NOT the owners of their own individual lives. They
>have learned that the “Community” is, and that they have to render it services without pay whether they
>want to or not.
>This, even in the land of the once free, is morally OBSCENE.
