NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Chase Manhattan Corp. reported lower third-quarter profit Wednesday that missed Wall Street forecasts due to weakness in its investment banking and other operations.

Chase, the No. 2 U.S. commercial bank that is buying J.P. Morgan & Co., said earnings excluding one-time items fell to $905 million, or 68 cents a share, from about $1.2 billion, or 92 cents a share, a year earlier. Wall Street analysts had forecast profits of 93 cents a share for the latest quarter, according to First Call, which tracks earnings estimates.

Separately, Morgan reported third-quarter profits of $2.77 a share, topping Wall Street forecasts of $2.63 a share and up from $2.22 a share a year earlier. Chase agreed to buy Morgan last month in a $33 billion stock deal.

Chase said its Capital Partners unit got hurt by a drop in the value of its investments in the quarter and that revenue from its business of advising on mergers and acquisitions -- known as investment banking -- fell from the prior quarter.

The results came a day after other big banks, led by Citigroup, reported profits that met or topped Wall Street forecasts.

Chase stock fell $3.94 to $34 in before-hours trading Wednesday after slipping $1.62 to $37.94 Tuesday. J.P. Morgan lost $5.38 to $137.62 Tuesday.
