Introduction to the Gold ETF
A Gold ETF is an"exchange traded fund" where the shares or units are invested only in bullion. There are several types of gold ETFs, including open-ended funds, closed-ended funds, and unit investment trusts. Some types of gold ETF have differing tax consequences particularly in the USA. There are also ETFs that invest in both gold and silver bullion.
Bullion ETF shares are generally backed by gold or silver bullion bars held by the custodian for the fund. Gold ETF shares trade on a stock exchanges such as the ASX, TSX, LSE or the NYSE.
The new Gold ETFs are expected to greatly increase the demand for gold by making gold available to institutional investors. In fact this already seems to be happening as Gold Bullion Securities snapped up 20 tons of gold during its first week of trading on the LSE.
Advantages of a Gold ETF:
Gold ETF shares are highly liquid.
Gold ETF shares require no maintenance by the investor.
Gold ETF shares have gold as the underlying asset.
Gold ETF shares have zero credit risk.

A Gold ETF allows you to invest in gold without the"management risk" associated with gold mining companies.
