~ Initial jobless claims continue to be a key component in weekly movements of the WLI. Jobless claims rose by 33,000 last week, climbing to 385,000 from 352,000 the previous week. This rise in claims contributed to the fall in this week’s index level.
~ Increases in mortgage applications for the week indicate that resiliency in the housing market remains. This increase tempered the index’s slide.
~ Financial components of the WLI remain unimpressive, as the S&P 500 and yields on 10-year Treasuries continue to languish.
~ Prices for industrial materials remain suppressed, and currently hover around 28-month lows. However, evidence suggests that prices are beginning to firm.
