U.S. central bank cuts interest rates by half percentage point to bolster economy

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - <font color="#FF0000">The Federal Reserve cut interest rates a half percentage point Monday morning to bolster U.S. markets and the U.S. economy in the wake of the worst terrorist attacks in its history</font>.

The Fed cut its target for short-term interest rates a half percentage point to <font color="#FF0000">3.0 percent from 3.5 percent</font>, its eighth cut of the year, in an effort to make money more accessible to consumers and avoid a recession.
