Argentines Demand Food, Loot Markets in 4 States, Clarin Says
By John Lyons
Buenos Aires, Dec. 16 (Bloomberg) -- Argentines in four provinces gathered and demanded food at supermarkets, Clarin reported. Looting broke out at some locations.
Officials in Mendoza province began distributing food yesterday after at least eight incidents of looting or looting attempts at markets there, the paper said. The mayor of Rosario, in Santa Fe province, called on the federal government to provide at least 7,000 boxes of food rations for the poor, who had surrounded supermarkets there demanding goods.
In Buenos Aires province, officials at Carrefour SA in the Avellaneda neighborhood agreed yesterday to provide food and other supplies for at least 500 people after a militant organization of unemployed people occupied the supermarket for hours, refusing to leave until their food demands were met.
In the Entre Rios town of Concordia, a mob broke in and looted the defunct supermarket MaxiTotal, which still had food on its shelves despite being shuttered after going bankrupt months ago, the Clarin reported.
